Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)

Intrusion prevention is a pre-emptive approach to network security used to identify potential threats and respond to them swiftly.  Like an intrusion detection system (IDS), an intrusion prevention system (IPS) monitors network traffic. However, because an exploit may be carried out very quickly after the attacker gains access. IPS also have the ability to take immediate action, based on a set of rules established by the network administrator.

For example, an IPS might drop a packet that it determines to be malicious and block all further traffic from that IP address or port. Legitimate traffic, meanwhile, should be forwarded to the recipient with no apparent disruption or delay of service.

Cyberoam Intrusion Prevention System:

It protects against network and application-level attacks, securing organizations against intrusion attempts, malware, Trojans, DoS. And DDoS attacks, malicious code transmission, backdoor activity, and blended threats.

  • An IPS are largely ineffective for dealing with any kind of threats on the application layer.
  • It is unable to detect complex threats as it needs to know the nature of the attack to stop it.
  • It is strained under a high volume of traffic while having a sinister reputation for false positives.

Cisco recently introduced Cisco ASA with FirePOWER Services – the industry’s first, threat-focused next-generation firewall (NGFW) .Which delivers superior, multi-layered protection, improves visibility and reduces security costs and complexity. This solution combines Cisco’s industry-leading ASA firewall with Source fire’s industry-leading next-generation IPS (NGIPS) and advanced malware protection (AMP) in a single device.
